Google Classroom – Manage Student Groups

Enhance your teaching and improve classroom management by utilising student groups.

Basic setup & use

By using student groups, you can provide targeted assignments, differentiate instruction, and foster collaborative activities.

Create a student group
  1. Go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Select the class then click People.
  3. In the top right corner, click Create Group.
  4. Name your group (e.g., “Reading Group A”, “Math Project Team”).
  5. Check the boxes next to the students you want to include.
  6. Click Create.
Edit a Student group
  1. Go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Open Google Classroom and go to the class.
  3. Click People.
  4. Find the group and click More > Edit group.
  5. Change the name, add or remove students.
  6. Click Save.
Add or remove students
  1. Go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Click the class and then People to view all students and groups.
  3. Locate the group you want to modify.
  4. Click on the group name to expand the list of members.
  5. Adding students: Check the box next to any student you want to add to the group.
  6. Removing students: Uncheck the box next to any student you want to remove from the group.
  7. Click Save to finalize your changes.
Delete a student group
  1. Go to classroom.google.com and open the class containing the group you want to delete.
  2. Click the class and then People.
  3. Locate the group you wish to delete.
  4. Next to the group name, click the More icon (three vertical dots).
  5. Select Delete group
  6. A pop-up window will appear to confirm the deletion. Double-check that you are deleting the correct group.
  7. Click Delete to permanently delete the group.
Delete multiple student groups
  1. Go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Click the class and then People.
  3. Check the boxes next to the groups you want to delete.
  4. In the “Bulk actions” menu, click Delete. Then, confirm the deletion.
Find groups
  1. Go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Click the class and then People.
  3. To expand a group and find the list of students within it, select the group name.
  4. To collapse a group and hide the member list, select the group name again.

Use a group

The next step is to learn how to utilize your student groups effectively. Let’s delve into some practical applications.

Create assignments for a group
  1. Go to classroom.google.com and open your class.
  2. Click on the Classwork tab.
  3. At the top, click Create and choose Assignment.
  4. On the right side of the assignment creation page, next to “Assign to,” you’ll see a button with the number of students and groups in your class. Click this button.
  5. A window will pop up with two tabs: “All students” and “Groups.” Click on the Groups tab.
  6. Check the box next to the group you want to assign the assignment to. You can assign to multiple groups by checking multiple boxes.
  7. Once you’ve selected all the groups, click Done.
  8. Complete the rest of the assignment details, such as the title, instructions, and due date.
  9. Finally, click Create to post the assignment to the selected groups.
