The 12 Apps of Christmas: 10. Access your files from anywhere with Filr

On the tenth day of Christmas IT gave to me…

Filr

Filr is a ‘sync and share’ service similar to Google Drive and other similar cloud services. Our Filr service, however, has the benefit of giving you access to files being stored and managed on Barton Peveril IT Services’ own servers. While Google Drive is the IT Services team’s favourite place to store work, Filr will be useful for those that have not yet made the move to G Suite and want to continue to use the college’s traditional file servers.

Filr allows staff and students to access their files and folders from a desktop, web browser or mobile device. There are mobile apps for iPhones, iPads, Android phones and tablets. Files can be accessed from a web browser in college or at home and shared with other staff or students. Additionally, there is also a Windows and Mac client which allows files and folders to be synchronised with a home desktop or laptop.

Accessing Filr

To access Filr visit https://filr.barton.ac.uk or click on the MyFiles quick link on your myBarton homepage. When prompted enter your college username and password.

Here is a brief look at what Filr gives you access to:

My Files

This shows you your personal files stored in your college home drive. You can create new folders as well as upload and download files.

Shared with Me

Sharing is a feature Filr shares with Google Drive. You can share files with other students or staff or even an entire class or course.

Shared by Me

Here you can keep track of all the files you have shared. Check to see who you have shared files with, what their status is, and share new files.

Net Folders

Net Folders contains folders you’d usually find on the Public drive. You may not see any at first, however, if there is a Public folder you’d like to see contact IT.

Filr Applications

Filr is a lot more than just a website, it is also a number of applications available for desktop and mobile platforms.

Desktop Applications

Filr is available for Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X, and Linux. This application provides access directly from your computer file system wherever you have an internet connection. You are then able to download those files explicitly, or access them on demand.

To install the Filr desktop application:

  1. After logging into Filr, click on your name at the top right;
  2. Select Download Filr Desktop App from the menu;
  3. Download the client and follow the on-screen instructions for the relevant operating system.

Mobile Applications

You can find the Filr app in the mobile app stores for iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. Visit the relevant app store, search for Filr, and then press install. When you first open the Filr mobile app it will ask you for the following address – https://filr.barton.ac.uk.
