Using Chromecast to display your screen or presentation

There are a growing number of teaching and meeting rooms that are equipped with Chromecast capabilities. Chromecast allows staff to wirelessly share the screens/content on their Chromebook, tablet or phone with the projector or TV screen in the room. It removes requirements for cables or adaptors when wanting to display a presentation or video from a mobile device. The instructions on how to use the Chromecast feature are below and also in the rooms.

  1. Switch the main display of the projector or screen to the Chromecast input
    Use the button on the HDMI input switch to select the Chromecast on input 2. In some rooms (e.g. Akehurst or Conference Room) you may need to select HDMI 2 using the remote.
  2. Ensure Chromecast device is on
    Look on the wall near the teacher computer and you should see a USB power supply powering the Chromecast. Make sure this is turned on.
  3. Connect your device (Chromebook, Tablet or Phone) to the eduroam WiFi network as a member of staff
    In order to see Chromecasts you must be connected to eduroam WiFi using your staff credentials. Chromecast is not available to students.
  4. Cast your computer screen
    You can mirror your entire computer screen on a Chromebook or if using Chrome on a Mac or Windows computer.1. On your computer, open Chrome.
    2. At the top right, you click the Cast  extension. If this is not visible click More Cast.
    3. At the top, next to ‘Cast to’, click the Down arrow.
    4. Click Cast desktop.
    5. Choose your Chromecast room where you want to display your screen.
  5. Cast a tab from Chrome
    It is also possible to share an individual tab from Chrome rather than your entire screen.1. On your computer, open Chrome.
    2. At the top right, you click the Cast  extension. If this is not visible click More Cast.
    3. Choose your Chromecast room where you want to display your tab.
    4. When your tab is being shown on a projector, you’ll see  .
    5. When you’ve finished, to the right of the address bar, click Cast  > Stop.
  6. Cast videos and media
    You can cast a YouTube Video or content from BBC iPlayer using a Chromecast. You can access these through the Chrome browser or through the players app on your mobile device.
    Search for the Cast  icon in the corners of the player.
